In Japan, there are 3 ways to say “I love you”:
You say “Daisuki (大好き)” for the friends and person you like,
you say “Aishiteru (愛してる)” for a more serious relationship,
and you say “Koishiteru ( 恋してる)” to the person you want to spend the rest of your life with.
And they follow this rule. They preserve the meaning of ‘I love you’ and never lose its essence unlike us.

Today’s Japanese word/kanji of the day is 囲む (kakomu) which means “to surround” or “enclose.”
Mnemonic:
The best way to capture a large number (#) of things is to 囲む(kakomu) surround them with a fence (口).

Today’s Japanese word of the day is だんだん (dan dan) and means “gradually.”
I.E.:
- だんだん近づく (dan dan chikadzuku) = gradually comes closer
- だんだん背が高くなる(dan dan se ga takakunaru) = gradually becomes taller
- だんだん大きくなる (dan dan ookikunaru) = gradually gets bigger

arghlblargh!: double the trouble
Today’s Japanese theme of the day will be doubling sounds:
- ころ = koro = around that time
コロコロ = koro koro = the sound of a small pebble-like object rolling around- 玉 = tama = ball
たまたま = tama tama = happened accidentally/by chance- まだ = mada = not yet
まだまだ = mada mada = not…
arghlblargh!: 恥
Today’s Venn kanji of the day is 恥 (haji).
Haji means “shame” or “embarrassment” and its use can be seen in the word 恥ずかしい (hazukashii) which means “shy” or “embarrassed.”
When taken apart, 恥 (haji) can be reduced to 耳 (mimi) and 心 (kokoro), the kanji for “ear” and “heart”, respectively.
I’m sure you kanji-learners can come up with a better mnemonic, but for me, “when someone whispers words of love (heart) into your ear, you become embarrassed.” ^^

わけわからない
Today’s phrase of the day is わけ(が)わからない (wake (ga) wakaranai!).
It means “I don’t get it at all!”
It’s often used in conjunction with (tte), as in “[subject]tte wake wakaranai!” to express frustration and mean “I don’t get [subject] at all!”
Example:
[女 = onna = women]
A: Onnatte wake wakaranai yo!
C: And you never will.
